I had been thinking of redoing my unloved and barren front and back gardens in Alexandria for years and finally stumbled across Kev and Inovasis Design. I called ‘The Urban Balcony’ to see if they could suggest which would be suitable plants for our harbourside patio that we were renovating, and they recommended I speak to their designer, Kev from inovasis design.

Kev came to our home for an onsite consultation the next day and after a relaxed discussion with my husband and I, provided a full landscape plan rather than just suggesting plants. We found him to be very helpful with some great ideas and an imaginative plan for our patio and would recommend him.

We approached Kev to design the gardens of our beach house in Goolwa. As the house is literally behind the sand dunes we had no idea what plants would survive the salt laden winds. As my husband and I are from different cultural backgrounds we wanted him to create spaces that reflected our individual tastes, was reminiscent of places we have travelled coupled with being sympathetic to the property location.

He also included extensive undercover decked outdoor living and dining area’s as we’re keen entertainers. He even managed to include stone paving and steps referrencing my grandmothers Portuguese bungalow in Kerala in South India into the design – a place I told him had a special place in my heart during our first meeting.

We first met Kev when we started ripping up our front yard as he was walking past with his adorable dog.

He stopped to say ‘hi’ and a quick ‘welcome to the neighbourhood’ chat, and soon after he was diving head first into our backyard to see what he could make of it.

It started as a real mess and had not been looked after for many years, so although we had a fair idea of what we wanted to accomplish, Kev came up with a Concept Plan including all the planting plus a lighting plan and some clever ideas that we would never have thought of!

We’re now in the process of constructing it ourselves and will no doubt enjoy it a whole lot more – it’s functional and clever in its design, without being too high maintenance.

We flew Kev over to Adelaide when we bought our new home after moving from Scotland. The back garden site is an unusual shape and we had no idea what to do with it, however Kev conducted a detailed on site consultation with us about what we like, didn’t like (plants, materials, colours and scents) and what uses and needs we could potentially see us needing from the garden over the years, rather then just the short term.

Kev made it enjoyable from the start even before the consultation at our home by by suggesting we take time (over a wine!) to sit and view each part of the garden from every aspect at different times of the day and evening rather than just the view from the house window as we’d been doing.

Kev then spent a couple of hours with us then went away and carefully considered what we had discussed (including our budget and the need to build in stages rather than all at once) and came up with various sketches and a plan that showed us how the garden could be segmented and created over time to incorporate a vegie patch, undercover dining area, some citrus trees, a lawn area for our young son as well as an informal garden that would showcase lots of natives and other plants suitable for the hot SA sun.

We now have a great design that we can have fun creating, and found the whole process relaxed and enjoyable and would thoroughly recommend Kev and inovasis design to anyone that needs help with creating their dream garden. We still liaise with Kev as we go and he’s always there to provide advice and support.
